September 2009 - Professional Training for Ex-offender Employment
Retention
Funding from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services will enable NADAP to provide seven trainings for criminal justice and workforce development professionals on Professional Training for Ex-offender Employment Retention. This one-day training will enable participants to effectively identify and address issues that impact an ex-offender's ability to achieve long-term employment, thus increasing the likelihood of successfully entering the world of work, reintegrating into the community and decreasing recidivism. Training participants will receive a resource manual containing practical applications for use with clients and resources to assist clients in managing a variety of life issues such as housing, child care and personal finances.
June 2009 - Employment Retention & Community Reintegration Training
Funding from the New York City Council enabled NADAP to facilitate a three-day, train-the-trainer workshop for chemical dependency treatment and workforce development professionals. The workshop used the Makin' It Work curriculum, a cognitive-behavioral program developed by Steve Parese, Ed.D., which targets ex-offenders in transition from various correctional environments back into the community and the world of work. The program challenges ex-offenders to examine how their own attitudes and perceptions have steered them to and justified choices to engage in harmful, illegal behaviors.
January 2009 - Presentation at ASAP's State-wide Annual Conference
NADAP spearheaded the creation of a presentation for the 2009 Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers (ASAP) Conference entitled Cross-Systems Collaboration with Treatment, Criminal Justice and Workforce Development Systems. This interactive panel, which included participants from the Division of Parole, Odyssey House, The Fortune Society, and NADAP's Comprehensive Employment Services, was designed to address the challenges of cross-system collaboration and presented best practice strategies that lead to a unified support system for clients.
Collaboration across systems is critical to successful client outcomes. This presentation brought together the knowledge and expertise of several leaders in various systems in an interactive format. Participants completed a brief questionnaire, at the beginning of the session, regarding their challenges working with the various systems in their programs and regions. The panel then used the responses to engage the participants in a brainstorming session to address these issues and jointly identify solutions. Panelists presented the innovative strategies for effectively assisting clients they have successfully applied by fostering communication and collaboration among systems. Participants also engaged the panel to determine how they could incorporate those methods into their own programs and/or regions.
October 2008 - Co-occurring Disorders Training
NADAP's Center for Professional Development launched a new training: Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with Co-occurring Disorders based on SAMHSA's TIP 42. This two-day training is targeted to professionals in the nonprofit community. Participants learn the guiding principles and core competencies that comprise effective service delivery to persons with co-occurring disorders, using the most up-to-date research-based treatment advances. Using three case samples and CSAT's TIP 42 as a "live" resource, participants learn and apply practices they'll be able to readily implement. The training is eligible for CASAC and CRC contact hours.
April 2008 - Drug-free Workplace Presentation at The Maids Convention
NADAP presented a training in Scottsdale, Arizona at the annual convention of The Maids, a home services maintenance company. The training titled: The Elephant in the Office: Recognizing and Addressing Workplace Substance Abuse, was based on NADAP's Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign.
Participants learned the scope and impact of substance abuse on business and on the community, recognizing signs and symptoms of substance abuse, identifying resources for creating and implementing a Drug-free Workplace Policy and Program, and a risk management perspective on how to address possible workplace substance abuse issues.

November 2007 - Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign
Funding from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services enabled NADAP to develop the Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign. October 2007 - It's Everybody's Business: Outcomes-driven Management in Addictions Service Delivery
Performance evaluation and outcome measurement have become priority activities for program leaders who understand that good client service produces good outcomes. Public funding of treatment services is increasingly linked with performance and outcomes; effective 9-07, all State and many other providers were required to report on outcomes using SAMHSA's National Outcome Measures (NOMs). CPD's workshop presented management tools and strategies, applicable with limited resources and in line with SAMHSA's NOMs, to improve outcomes by evaluating service delivery.
Participants learned to identify both front-line and leadership staff member perspectives about the transition to increased focus on outcomes measurement, and examined examples from experience demonstrating the connection between evaluating services and improving outcomes, establishing that meeting performance goals enhances quality outcomes for clients. They also learned and applied evaluation tools and strategies to sample program goals, brainstorm potential impact of leadership expectations and interventions directed toward achieving specific outcomes, and explore ways to effectively communicate related leadership messages to all staff members.
